Non-Departmental Public Bodies

The FCO sponsors nine Non-Departmental Public Bodies (NDPBs). A number of appropriately qualified and experienced members of the public are appointed to each of these bodies. These appointments are known as public appointments.

British Council

The British Council connects people worldwide with learning opportunities and creative ideas from the United Kingdom, and builds lasting relationships between the UK and other countries.

Great Britain-China Centre

This Great Britain-China Centre works to foster and develop relations between the United Kingdom and the People’s Republic of China and to promote mutual knowledge and understanding.

The Marshall Aid Commemoration Commission

This MACC administers the British Marshall Scholarships on behalf of the FCO.

Westminster Foundation for Democracy

The Foundation funds projects around the world which are aimed at building and strengthening pluralist democracies.

Diplomatic Service Appeals Board

The DSAB's main purpose is to advise the Foreign Secretary whether premature retirement or termination of an appointment on grounds of failed probation, or dismissal on any grounds, is fair.

The Government Hospitality Advisory Committee for the Purchase of Wine

This committee is responsible for providing advice on the maintenance of appropriate standards of wines for use at Government functions.

Wilton Park Academic Council

The Wilton Park Academic Council was established in 1949 to ensure Wilton Park's academic independence.

Foreign Compensation Commission

The Foreign Compensation Commission (FCC) is a tribunal established under the Foreign Compensation Act 1950 to assess the amount of compensation British claimants are entitled to under international and British law for losses suffered abroad.
